Top 10 Downloaded Apps of 2013: Candy Crush Wins

You’ve seen people playing it on the subway, during lunch breaks and even as they wait in line at the movies.  It seems like Candy Crush is everywhere.  As it turns out, that may not merely be a product of perception.

Apple’s list of the top 10 downloaded free apps is out, and Candy Crush Saga came out on top.  It was the number one most downloaded free app for the iPhone in 2013.

The game, which originally launched in November 2012, has over 500 million downloads and has been played over 150 billion times, according to developer King.

Popular games tend to cycle through every year.  In the past, there was Angry Birds, Words with Friends and Farmville.  However, King co-founder Sebastian Knutsson thinks Candy Crush can stay on top with frequent updates that keep the game new and exciting for users.

There were several other notable trends in Apple’s top 10 list.

For one, communications apps were found to be very popular.  Vine was the fourth most downloaded free app, while Snapchat came in at sixth and Instagram at seventh.

Despite the rise of new competitors like iHeart Radio, Pandora remains high on the list at number nine on the free app download chart.

Interestingly, many of the hot apps from 2012 left the top 10 this year.  This includes Twitter, Pinterest, Skype and games like Draw Something and the original Temple Run.

The complete top 10 list is featured below:

  1. Candy Crush Saga
  2. YouTube
  3. Temple Run 2
  4. Vine
  5. Google Maps
  6. Snapchat
  7. Instagram
