The Shivah: Kosher Edition

78 Overall Score

captivating and immersive narrative

Short length of gameplay

A self-contained murder mystery all at the click of a button, and now at the touch of a finger.

For those who really enjoyed the point-and-click adventures that were popular in the 80s and 90s it can be difficult to find many good modern day iterations of the genre. But as more popular and higher production value games come to smartphones and tablets, the point-and-click once again has a platform on which to excel. The Shivah: Kosher Edition is definitely a game that has taken advantage of this and is worth getting your hands on.

Kosher Edition is a re-release and update of Wadjet Eye Games’ 2006, The Shivah, with updated graphics, a new soundtrack, and redesigned controls for tablets and smartphones. It is an intriguing game with a fully engrossing story that seamlessly brings point-and-click gameplay to touchscreen devices.

Play as Rabbi Stone, a disillusioned New York Rabbi who becomes wrapped up in a murder mystery after unexpectedly inheriting $10,000 after a former congregation member dies. Collect clues and interrogate other characters in an attempt to solve the ever deepening mystery that soon surrounds Rabbi Stone.

The game revolves heavily around dialog and the player’s choices when conversing with other characters. While those choices are primarily black-and-white, they allow the game to split into different direction based on how the player decides to handle certain situations. The puzzle parts of the game require some thought and can be a bit tricky especially if you are not accustomed to the ways these sorts of games have done things in the past.

It is important to note that while the game’s story revolves around the Jewish faith, it is not required for the player to have any deep understanding of it. While those of the Jewish faith may find slightly deeper or inside understanding into the themes of the game, the troubles that Rabbi Stone faces, the doubts about his own faith, are nonetheless easily relatable to goys as well (there is a nice in-game Yiddish dictionary so you can learn a few words).

The Shivah: Kosher Edition is a good game which features a captivating, immersive murder mystery and a tightly contained storyline. It may be a too short for some people’s liking and some of the puzzle system may be frustrating for newcomers to the genre, but overall it is worth playing if you have ever enjoyed point-and-click adventures or are interested in trying one out.
